How to have a great We-Q conversation

The We-Q test data identifies a wide range of important issues to discuss. By having an honest and open conversation, new insights will emerge to improve the health and effectiveness of your team. Here’s a few tips to help make that happen:

1. Data Review

After the session is closed, everyone can take a few moments to review the data or the Champion may guide a group review of:
How the overall We-Q has changed from previous sessions
Pillar scores against the overall We-Q
Question scores against the Pillar score
Variation of individual scores within specific questions

2. Identify the Issue to discuss

It is easy to waste time trying to pick the exact right question to discuss. There are a few approaches to quickly identify a topic to explore:
Pick a high or low scored Pillar and Question for the group to focus on
Invite the group to notice ‘what stood out for you from the data?’ and then pick the majority view
Choose a question that has not yet been discussed as a group

3 Encourage a Deep Conversation

Everyone is responsible for good behaviour in a healthy listening and learning culture. Common ground rules can be helpful:
Ensure that devices are put down as eye contact and attention are very important during the discussion
Balance air time so those with power are sensitive to those with less
‘Outliers’ whose scores differ to the rest of the team can have the most insights to share but can be reluctant due to group dynamics

4. Diagnosis

Come to a group understanding of the question by:
Checking what each member understood the question to mean to them
The behaviours the team believe would constitute a high score

5. Actions & Development

Record the agreed collective and individual actions to improve the score for this question, which may form part of an overall team development plan.

6. Check out

Individually reflect on the session with a summary of your personal commitments to shift the group behaviour and culture. Recognise within the process where U-Qs may be helpful to support the process.
